UN-Habitat is holding its 24th Governing Council from 15 to 19 April in Nairobi under the special theme "Sustainable urban development: the role of cities in creating improved economic opportunities for all, with special references to youth and gender”.
The Council addressed this specific theme during the Dialogue with Habitat Partners, among which Local Authorities, on Wednesday 17 April.
On this occasion, the Co-President of UCLG and Mayor of Harare (Zimbabwe), Mr. Muchadeyi Masunda, member of the UN-Habitat Advisory Group on Gender Issues (AGGI), addressed the audience of the Dialogue to recall the importance of women's economic empowerment.
Ms. Fatimetou Mint Abdel Malick, Mayor of Tevragh-Zeina (Mauritania) took also the floor to advocate for increasing the participation of women in local decision-making. Ms. Mint Abdel Malick is also the Chair of the Network of Local Elected Women of Africa (NLEWA), an active network of the UCLG Standing Committee on Gender Equality.
