Welcome to Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, new Executive Director of UN Women

Following the appointment of the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, the UCLG Standing Committee on Gender Equality wishes to congratulate Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka for her appointment as Executive Director of UN Women.

As a key partner, UCLG looks forward to further deepen the collaboration with UN Women under her new leadership through the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in January 2013 during the Global Conference of Local Elected Women in Paris in order to promote the participation of women in local decision-making and fostering gender equality within the global agenda of local and regional governments.

As per the important leadership positions undertaken by Ms. Mlambo-Ngcuka in the Government of South Africa and her experience in advocating for women's issues, we wish her all the best in this new exciting and challenging post at the head of the UN agency for gender equality and the empowerment of women. A special welcome comes from our African colleagues, the Network of Local Elected Women of Africa.
