UCLG celebrates women’s participation in local elections in Saudi Arabia

On Saturday, 12 December, women will be able to stand and vote for the first time in municipal elections in Saudi Arabia. UCLG celebrates this step forward and congratulates the 978 pioneering women standing for office.

Although women make up less than 10 percent of the electoral roll (only 130,637 women are registered, compared to 1,355,840 men), these elections represent a landmark moment for women’s rights, local democracy, and for the international municipal movement.

We wish women candidates well in the elections, and call on women to go to the polls on this historic day for their country and women’s rights globally.
