    activities aim to:

    Background

Local and regional governments have a long track record of working internationally for gender equality.

    2004-2005

From 2004-2005, UCLG implemented a programme to create networks of elected women in its Regional Sections. This work established and renewed women's networks in African and Latin America.

    2006

In 2006, UCLG supported The Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) in drawing up the European Charter for Equality of Women and Men in Local Life.

    2011

In 2011, at the request of women members of UCLG, the existing UCLG Committee on Gender Equality was upgraded to a Standing Committee. This move makes the Committee a permanent statutory body of UCLG and reflects the strategic importance of gender equality to the organization.

    2013

In 2013, the Global Conference of Local Elected Women adopted the Paris Local and Regional Government Global Agenda for Equality of Women and Men in Local Life.
