About the standing Committee

The UCLG Standing Committee on Gender Equality, coordinated from the UCLG World Secretariat in Barcelona, is acknowledged as the global voice of local elected women by national agencies and the UN. It monitors and promotes the participation of women at local level across the world.

    Its mandate and
    activities aim to:

    • Increase local public participation of women in all their diversity
    • Monitor & provide gender transformative inputs to global agenda
    • Ensure gender mainstreaming throughout UCLG network
    • Nurture the Feminist Municipal Movement and develop a strong position in the Generation Equality process

Local and regional governments have a long track record of working internationally for gender equality.

From 2004-2005, UCLG implemented a programme to create networks of elected women in its Regional Sections. This work established and renewed women's networks in African and Latin America.

In 2006, UCLG supported The Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) in drawing up the European Charter for Equality of Women and Men in Local Life.

In 2011, at the request of women members of UCLG, the existing UCLG Committee on Gender Equality was upgraded to a Standing Committee. This move makes the Committee a permanent statutory body of UCLG and reflects the strategic importance of gender equality to the organization.

In 2013, the Global Conference of Local Elected Women adopted the Paris Local and Regional Government Global Agenda for Equality of Women and Men in Local Life.
