On the way to the World Congress and Summit of Local and Regional Governments foreseen in Tangier in next June 2026, more than 50 local women elected officials from all continents gathered in the Global Taskforce organized constituency of cities, territories and regions and led by United Cities and Local Governments will gather in New York in early March 2026 on the occasion of the 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, usually known as CSW70.
Reflecting on Ensuring and strengthening access to justice for all women and girls, as central theme, CSW70 will revolve around Women’s full and effective participation and decision making in public life, as well as the elimination of violence, for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls, a long-standing priority for local authorities from across the world, and a key driving issue for the Feminist Municipal Movement.
At the center of the Agenda: The Local and Regional Governments’ Days, which will develop under the motto “Localizing Equality, Justice and Democracy: Women’s Political Power and the New Generation of Local Public Services”, and dive into the question of ‘Equality in Local Decision-Making and Democracy’ and the need for ‘A Renewed Political Framework for Equality: Local Care Systems’. The meetings are part of the 100 Days of Multilateralism initiative that will articulate some of the most important global development milestones and processes in 2026: from the review of the New Urban Agenda and the 13th edition of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) to the review of SDG11 at the UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF2026), with the UCLG World Congress of Tangier as a beacon in the global conversation on development, care and equality.
Additionally, a number of local and regional governments and their key partners will have the opportunity to take part in several parallel events and activities, in order to uplift the local perspective into the global conversation on women’s political participation as marking a difference in public policies, and their innovative leadership in local decision-making. Among those, an official side-event co-organized by UCLG with the Governments of Mauritania, Canada, and Spain, and convened under the WYDE Women’s Leadership initiative led by UN Women and supported by the European Commission will focus on ‘Local Voices of Power: Expanding Women’s Political Participation, from Cities to Multilateralism’, directly echoing the important and long-standing work UCLG has led over the years for realizing equality in democracy, and nurturing the process of UCLG Local Social Covenant, the framework structuring the preparations of the next UCLG political mandate.
